The Best Damn Dive Boat Period!:  Nov 15-16 '03

Disclaimer-The trip title is simply a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Fox Sports Net show of similar name. No need to get worked up. Thank you, the Jolly Rogers 2 Legal Dept.

Crew- Jimmy Z went to Tallahassee to see the Seminoles kick ass so he busted out the boat keys to the irrepressible Freeshaft, and the free-agent primadonna locker room distraction Dive4Blood.

Guests- Bubblejunkie, Tropical Diver (Mrs. Fish Fryer), Fish Fryer (Mr. Tropical Diver) with two non Spearboard members, Mike Edenfield, and Bob Bulino.

Sea Conditions- The back end of the front prevented us from heading to the Middlegrounds Friday so we went with a single overnighter Offshore Steinhatchee trip as Plan B. Left Saturday early AM in 2'-3' seas which gradually laid down to nothing Sat. night. Sunday was a repeat day, 2'-3' laying down to flat seas on the ride in. Vis ranged from 40'-70' with little current, and water temps of 74 degrees.

Food- I told these guys that most Spearboard members are interested only in eating while on a charter trip yet they still brought tanks and spear guns. Dinner Saturday night consisted of the traditional Jolly Dogs, chicken wings, baked beans, and coleslaw. In addition, Freeshaft stepped up with a mojo pork roast that he lovingly cooked at his house for many hours. We brought a bushel of oysters that were consumed throughout the trip, and Fish Fryer showed off his culinary prowess by cooking pan fried grouper almandine on the ride in while I slaved to clean up the blood and gore splattered back deck.

Diving- You guys care about diving after that food report?!! Two words, no three for you, schools of gag grouper , OK four. We dove primarily on small ledges and rock piles in 60'-80' water. The rock piles I refer to are exposed, and undercut limestone rock ranging from the size of a dinner table to half the size of a football field which are encrusted with soft corals, sea fans, sponges, and gorgonians scattered over a wide area. You usually spear on the largest pile first, and swim over hard sea fan covered bottom to the next one.

Very fishy this weekend with many 15-20 pounds gags, and hogfish up to 8 pounds taken. Nailed our almost automatic 25 pound plus amberjack limit on one of the many wrecks we visit. Bubblejunkie, and Freeshaft each had an eight gag dive, while I managed 4 over 18 pounds throughout the course of the trip.

Tropical Diver was a champ! The only girl on the boat, she fit right in, shot some fish including her biggest to date (an amberjack), and dove until all her tanks were bone dry empty. She even filleted for hours at the dock. Sorry guys, she already taken.... by Fish Fryer who did quite well on his first spearfishing trip by the way.

Let me know if you want to set up a trip this winter, Offshore Steinhatchee or Middlegrounds. The spearfishing is only going to get better with each passing cold front. Standing by.
