Lutz Steelslingers Go Apesh*t in the Hatch! Commercial Trip Oct 8-9 '05

No sooner than getting off the phone with Bgbill on Friday afternoon telling me that the WCC tourney was canceled for weather, I get call from Jim Zurbrick telling me to pack my dive gear for an eleventh hour commercial trip. Realizing that soon as a charter captain I will be among a very minute group of US citizens who can not legally harvest a grouper in our country's 200 mile EEZ, and the fact that thanks to longline fishing the commercial grouper season will again be closed prematurely, I began preparations for my trip to the Hatch. One quick call to fellow Lutz steelslinger Fizisition, and the crew was rounded out for the final commercial excursion of 2005. Lutz, Florida who also claims iconic spearfishing figures like Ray Odor, and Bucket One as its own is without a doubt the spawning grounds for the ultimate slingers on the Florida west coast. Lutz up in this motherf*cking house !!! Yo Spearboard, holla a shout-out for Lutz!

Seas never got above 3' on Saturday, and laid down to 1' on Sunday. We dove from 60'-100' and enjoyed visibility from 15'-40'. I hope no one canceled any dive trips or events because of weather . Just to give you an idea of how stacked the fish are, we stopped at only five spots the entire weekend! Beyond the excellent shooting, the hook and line bite on Saturday night was nothing short of epic. In addition to the non stop mangos, and red snapper after the sunset, we had the 8#-15# gags biting as if they were grunts on the artificial reef. Everyone was so exhausted that we didn't even start diving until almost lunchtime on Sunday. In thirty six hours we were able to harvest what is typically taken with a full crew on weekend MG trip.

Sorry no pics. Like a bonehead, I left my camera in my office at the house. Fizisition also realized that he had no memory card in his camera after we were already underway.

My advice to anyone diving on the JR2 for the balance of this year, or early in 2006: Trophy Hunt!! If not, with the quantity of fish out there right now on our spots you will be vitually guaranteed your rec limits within only a couple of dives. Standing by......

AJ Suarez
